It interrupts the predictable rhythm of daily life and places us into unfamiliar environments where curiosity replaces autopilot. In doing so, it awakens something many of us have quietly lost: presence. When you are navigating a new city, tasting unfamiliar food, or hearing languages you don’t understand, your senses sharpen. You become fully engaged in the moment.

But the real value of travel goes deeper than just “seeing new places.” It’s about experiencing new perspectives. When you step into a different culture, you begin to understand that there are countless ways to live, think, and connect. This realization challenges assumptions and expands empathy, something that is increasingly rare in a world dominated by echo chambers and algorithms.

The Power of New Surroundings
New surroundings have a unique ability to reshape the way we think. When everything around you changes the landscape, the pace, the people, your mind is forced to adapt. Creativity increases, stress often decreases, and you begin to notice details you would normally ignore.

There’s a reason people often return from trips feeling refreshed or inspired. It’s not just the break from work; it’s the mental reset that comes from stepping into the unknown. Whether it’s watching a sunrise over the ocean, walking through a bustling market, or sitting quietly in nature, these moments create lasting impressions that no digital experience can replicate.

Why South Africa Stands Out
Few destinations capture the transformative power of travel quite like South Africa. It is a country defined by contrast and diversity, where mountains meet oceans, cities blend with wilderness, and cultures intertwine in complex and beautiful ways.

In one journey, you can experience the vibrant energy of Cape Town, the raw beauty of the Garden Route, and the untamed wildlife of Kruger National Park. Each environment offers something entirely different, yet equally powerful.

What makes South Africa particularly compelling is its ability to deliver both adventure and reflection. You can hike up Table Mountain in the morning, explore historic sites in the afternoon, and end your day watching the sun disappear into the Atlantic Ocean. At the same time, the country’s history and cultural depth invite meaningful reflection, offering travelers more than just surface-level experiences.

Human Connection Beyond the Screen
Perhaps the most underrated benefit of travel is the way it restores real human interaction. When you travel, you naturally engage with people, whether it’s asking for directions, sharing a meal, or hearing someone’s story. These moments are often spontaneous and unfiltered, making them far more meaningful than digital interactions.

In places like South Africa, where hospitality and storytelling are deeply embedded in the culture, these connections become even more impactful. Conversations with locals can offer insights that no guidebook or website ever could.

A Necessary Escape and Return
Travel is not about escaping life; it’s about expanding it. It reminds us that the world is far bigger, more diverse, and more interesting than our daily routines suggest. And when we return home, we carry those experiences with us, often with a renewed sense of perspective, gratitude, and openness.

In a world that increasingly pulls us inward, into screens, routines, and isolation, travel pushes us outward. It challenges us, connects us, and ultimately makes us more human.

If there was ever a time to explore, to experience, and to truly engage with the world, it’s now.

South Africa - 10 Fascinating Facts

1 - The Iconic Beauty of Table Mountain in Cape Town
One of the most recognizable landmarks in the world is Table Mountain, which towers above the vibrant city of Cape Town.
If you’re a lover of the ocean and its many wonders, then the Sardine Run in South Africa should be on your bucket list. Considered one of the greatest marine spectacles on Earth, this phenomenon sees billions of sardines migrating along the coast of the Eastern Cape, creating a breathtaking natural display of life, predators, and ocean drama. As the sardines swarm along the shoreline, a frenzy of activity unfolds, drawing not only tourists but an entire ecosystem of marine predators.

What is the Sardine Run?
Every year, from May to July, millions (sometimes billions) of sardines embark on their long migration from the cold waters of the southern Indian Ocean to the warmer waters of South Africa's coast. This migration is not only a marvel to witness but also a crucial event for the entire marine food chain. The sardines, though small, become the stars of a much larger show, attracting predators like dolphins, sharks, sea birds, and even whales, all of whom chase after the sardines for their high-energy feast.

The best place to catch the Sardine Run is along the Wild Coast of South Africa, stretching from the city of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal down to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. The underwater action takes place around the cool, nutrient-rich waters of the Agulhas Current, where the sardines are most often found in large shoals.

Why is it so Special?
Unrivaled Marine Diversity: Watching the Sardine Run is like witnessing an underwater war zone in the best sense of the word. The sheer number of species vying for their next meal makes for an awe-inspiring spectacle. You'll see dolphins performing synchronized attacks, schools of predatory fish hunting in unison, and even the occasional great white shark joining the chaos. Watching a pod of orcas take down a dolphin is a rare, but remarkable sight.
The Action: What makes the Sardine Run so incredible is not just the numbers, but the drama of it all. The sardines move in massive, tight schools to avoid predators, creating the illusion of a shimmering, pulsating wall of silver. These “bait balls” are surrounded by dolphins who herd them closer to the surface, sharks that dart in and out, and seagulls that dive in from above. Nature's predators are all at play in this remarkable feeding frenzy.
Ecological Importance: Beyond the thrill of the chase, the Sardine Run is crucial for the health of marine ecosystems. Sardines are a significant food source for many animals, and their annual migration helps maintain the balance in the ocean’s food web. Without the Sardine Run, many of these animals would have to find new feeding grounds or would face much leaner times.
Best Time to Visit
The Sardine Run typically peaks between June and July when the sardines are closest to the shore. However, the exact timing can vary each year depending on water temperatures, currents, and weather patterns. To catch the best action, planning a trip for these months is key. Keep in mind that the event is unpredictable, and the sardines may appear in different locations, so booking a tour with local guides will increase your chances of seeing the spectacle.

Where to Experience It
Durban: As one of the larger cities on the coast, Durban is a popular jumping-off point for tourists heading to the Sardine Run. Several dive shops and tour companies offer guided expeditions to view the migration from a boat or to dive in the heart of the action.
Aliwal Shoal: Located just south of Durban, Aliwal Shoal is known as one of the premier dive sites to experience the Sardine Run. The area is famous for its biodiversity and clear waters, making it a hotspot for divers who want to get up close to the action. The shoal’s waters are home to several species of sharks, dolphins, and turtles, all of which get involved in the feeding frenzy.
Port St. Johns: This small, picturesque town is right in the middle of the action and is one of the top spots along the Wild Coast. The deep-sea waters off the coast of Port St. Johns are perfect for spotting the massive sardine schools, and local guides offer boat tours to witness the migration first-hand.
Cintsa Bay & Coffee Bay: These less-visited spots along the Wild Coast also offer incredible Sardine Run experiences for those who want a more intimate adventure away from the larger crowds.
How to Experience the Sardine Run
Snorkeling and Scuba Diving: The Sardine Run is best experienced underwater, and there are several operators who offer snorkeling or scuba diving trips during this time. Diving with sharks, dolphins, and other marine life while surrounded by millions of sardines is truly one of the most unique experiences on the planet.
Boat Tours: If you don’t want to dive, boat tours offer a great way to observe the action. You can still get incredibly close to the feeding frenzy, with the added bonus of being able to watch everything unfold from the surface. Some boat tours also offer the opportunity to swim with dolphins and other marine creatures.
Aerial Viewing: If you’re looking for a truly bird’s eye view, consider taking a scenic flight over the ocean to observe the sardine schools and predators from above. This can be particularly stunning at dawn or dusk when the ocean is bathed in golden light.

Untamed Beauty of Mountain Zebra National Park

Exploring the Untamed Beauty of Mountain Zebra National Park

Nestled in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, Mountain Zebra National Park is one of the country’s hidden gems. This park is a must-visit destination for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and those looking to escape into a world of dramatic landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and remarkable animal sightings. Whether you're a seasoned safari-goer or a first-time visitor, Mountain Zebra offers something special, blending the thrill of wildlife encounters with the tranquility of the African bush.

A Brief History
The park’s history is as captivating as its landscapes. The Mountain Zebra National Park was established in 1937 to protect the endangered Mountain Zebra, a subspecies of the Cape Zebra. At one point, the Mountain Zebra had almost been driven to extinction, but thanks to conservation efforts and the park's protection, the population has flourished. Today, the park not only preserves the zebra population but also boasts a stunning array of flora and fauna.

The Landscape: Where Mountains Meet Plains
As the name suggests, the park is framed by towering mountain ranges and rolling plains, creating a striking contrast of environments. The terrain is incredibly varied, from steep, rocky hills to vast, open grasslands. There are also sections of thick, indigenous bushveld that add to the park's diversity. This variety of landscapes means that no two corners of the park feel the same, making every moment of your visit an exciting discovery.

One of the park’s most scenic features is the intricate network of roads that lead you through the park’s varied terrain. Whether you're driving the winding mountain passes or cruising along the open plains, the views are simply stunning. Don’t forget your camera—you’ll want to capture the beauty of this majestic landscape.

Wildlife: The Heartbeat of the Park
While the rugged beauty of Mountain Zebra National Park is captivating in its own right, the real highlight is the wildlife that calls it home. Aside from the star attraction, the Mountain Zebra, the park is a haven for a wide variety of animals. Visitors can expect to see the African buffalo, kudu, eland, and the endangered black rhinoceros. The park is also home to a wealth of birdlife, including the rare and elusive black eagle, which soars above the mountains.

For those with a passion for wildlife photography, Mountain Zebra National Park provides numerous opportunities to capture the majestic creatures in their natural habitat. The diversity of animals means that you're always in for a surprise, whether it’s a family of zebras grazing in the early morning light or a herd of buffalo crossing your path.

Hiking Trails and Outdoor Adventures
Mountain Zebra National Park is also a fantastic destination for outdoor adventure enthusiasts. One of the best ways to explore the park is by foot, and there are several well-maintained hiking trails that allow you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the African landscape.

For a short, moderate hike, the Nuwejaarspruit Trail offers a beautiful way to experience the park’s natural environment. The Groottevlei Trail, on the other hand, is perfect for those seeking a more challenging trek, offering panoramic views of the plains and mountains from the top. While hiking, be on the lookout for wildlife as many animals are often seen in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler.

For a truly unforgettable experience, consider booking a guided walking safari. These safaris give you the chance to explore the park on foot with an experienced guide who will share insights about the flora, fauna, and history of the area. It’s a more intimate way to experience the park, and you’ll come away with a deeper understanding of this fascinating environment.

Accommodation: A Comfortable Stay in the Wild
Whether you're a fan of rustic camping or prefer a more luxurious stay, Mountain Zebra National Park offers a variety of accommodation options to suit all tastes. The Main Rest Camp offers comfortable self-catering chalets with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Each chalet is designed to blend seamlessly with the environment, providing a perfect balance of comfort and nature.

For a more adventurous experience, the park also offers camping facilities, where you can set up your tent under the stars. There’s something truly magical about camping in such a remote, tranquil location, with only the sounds of nature accompanying your night.

If you're looking for a unique experience, consider booking one of the park’s luxury lodges, where you can enjoy fine dining and exceptional service while still being close to nature. Imagine having dinner on a deck that overlooks the African wilderness, with the sound of distant wildlife adding to the ambience.

The Best Time to Visit
Mountain Zebra National Park is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you hope to experience. Spring (September to November) and Autumn (March to May) offer mild weather, with abundant wildlife sightings and lush landscapes. Summer (December to February) can be warmer, but this is also the time when animals congregate around waterholes, making it an excellent time for game viewing.

Winter (June to August) is cooler, with fewer tourists, making it an ideal time for those who prefer a more peaceful and quieter experience. During winter, animals can be easier to spot as the bush thins out.

Often referred to as the smallest of the world’s six floral kingdoms, this unique and diverse region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s most spectacular biodiversity hotspots. For nature lovers, botany enthusiasts, and curious travelers alike, the Cape Floral Kingdom offers a magical journey into a vibrant landscape filled with extraordinary plants, wildlife, and panoramic views.

1. A World of Botanical Wonders
The Cape Floral Kingdom is a captivating collection of plant species, making it the world's richest temperate floral region. The kingdom stretches across the Cape Peninsula and the surrounding areas, with stunning landscapes of rugged mountains, vast fynbos fields, and coastal wonders. It’s home to over 9,000 plant species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. This extraordinary diversity is due to the region’s complex climate, which includes Mediterranean-like summers and mild, wet winters.

As you explore the area, you’ll encounter a dazzling variety of fynbos—a unique vegetation type found only in this region. The fynbos is characterized by shrubs, heathlands, and herbs, many of which are brightly colored and aromatic. Proteas, with their large, spiky flowers, are perhaps the most famous of these, symbolizing South Africa’s natural beauty. Visitors can also marvel at the brilliant colors of the King Protea, the national flower of South Africa, and the delicate beauty of ericas and restios.

2. The Iconic Table Mountain
One of the first things that comes to mind when thinking of the Cape Floral Kingdom is Table Mountain. This iconic flat-topped mountain dominates the Cape Town skyline and is an absolute must-see for anyone visiting the region. The Table Mountain National Park, a core part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, is home to a vast array of plant species, many endemic to the region.

Visitors can hike up to the summit of Table Mountain or take the cable car to enjoy panoramic views of the city, the ocean, and the surrounding mountains. The biodiversity is astounding, with over 1,470 species of plants found in the national park alone. For those with an interest in photography, the vibrant plant life against the backdrop of the ocean and Cape Town is perfect for capturing unforgettable shots.

3. Exploring the Cape Peninsula
Another highlight of the Cape Floral Kingdom is the Cape Peninsula, where visitors can immerse themselves in a combination of lush vegetation, sweeping ocean vistas, and diverse wildlife. The famous Cape of Good Hope marks the southwestern tip of Africa and is a dramatic point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. The surrounding area, which is part of the Cape Point Nature Reserve, is home to a treasure trove of indigenous flora, including the fynbos, as well as towering cliffs and pristine beaches.

Take a scenic drive along the Chapman’s Peak or hike through one of the many trails that lead you through the Cape Point’s rugged terrain. As you explore the Cape Peninsula, keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife, including baboons, eland antelope, and the Cape zebra.

4. Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens: A Jewel of the Kingdom
Located at the foot of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful gardens in the world. This garden is a living testament to the incredible plant diversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Here, visitors can stroll through well-maintained paths surrounded by a spectacular variety of indigenous plants, including the region’s iconic proteas, strelitzias, and vygies.

The garden is divided into different sections, each showcasing different aspects of South Africa’s flora, including a medicinal plant garden, a fragrant garden, and even a Cycad Garden. Don’t miss the Boomslang Tree Canopy Walkway, which offers an elevated view of the gardens and the surrounding mountain landscape.

5. The Cape Winelands: Nature Meets Culture
While the flora is the main draw, the Cape Floral Kingdom is also an area rich in culture, and there’s no better place to experience this fusion than in the Cape Winelands. Just a short drive from Cape Town, the wine-producing regions of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl offer a perfect combination of breathtaking landscapes and fine wine.

As you tour the vineyards, you’ll see the fertile valleys dotted with wildflowers and indigenous plants, and many wineries have beautiful gardens where you can relax with a glass of local wine. The charm of the wine estates, coupled with the backdrop of the surrounding mountains, creates an unforgettable experience.

6. Responsible Travel and Conservation
The Cape Floral Kingdom is a vital ecological region, and it’s important to remember that it’s also one of the world’s most threatened environments. Conservation efforts are ongoing to preserve the delicate ecosystems here, and sustainable tourism plays a key role in ensuring its future.

When visiting, make sure to respect the environment by sticking to designated paths, avoiding disturbing wildlife, and supporting local conservation initiatives. The region's natural beauty is fragile, and every effort to protect it helps ensure that future generations can enjoy this global treasure.

A Journey into the Heart of South Africa’s Wildlife

Exploring Addo Elephant National Park: A Journey into the Heart of South Africa’s Wildlife

If you’ve ever dreamed of being surrounded by elephants in their natural habitat, Addo Elephant National Park is a place you absolutely cannot miss. Situated in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, just under an hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth, Addo offers a unique wildlife experience like no other.

The Appeal of Addo Elephant National Park

What makes Addo Elephant National Park so special? The answer is simple: it’s one of the best places in the world to witness African elephants up close. Originally established to protect the endangered elephants of the area, the park now serves as a sanctuary for more than 600 elephants and offers an incredible opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to experience these majestic creatures in the wild.

However, Addo is not just home to elephants. It’s a diverse ecosystem, teeming with over 700 plant species, 175 bird species, and a variety of animals including lions, buffalo, zebras, and more. Whether you’re a photographer, a nature lover, or just someone seeking a peaceful escape into nature, Addo has something for everyone.

A Day in Addo: What to Expect

As you drive through the park, the first thing you’ll notice is the wide-open spaces—perfect for spotting wildlife. Addo’s landscape is diverse, from dense thicket areas to sweeping plains, giving you a chance to spot animals in various environments. You’ll likely see herds of elephants, sometimes coming close to your vehicle, giving you an awe-inspiring moment to appreciate their enormity and grace. The elephants here are known for their relatively relaxed temperament, and many visitors have had unforgettable encounters with them.

Exploring Other Wildlife
While elephants are the main attraction, don’t forget to look out for other fascinating creatures. The park is home to the “Big Seven” (elephants, lions, buffalo, leopards, rhinos, sharks, and whales) and it’s easy to spot zebras, warthogs, and kudu along the way. If you’re lucky, you may also get a glimpse of the park’s lion pride, which roams the northern part of the park.

For bird lovers, Addo offers incredible birdwatching opportunities. You might see species like the black-shouldered kite, kori bustard, or the endangered Cape vulture soaring overhead.

The Addo Experience: Afternoon Relaxation and Activities

After a morning of game viewing, head to one of the park’s rest areas for a bit of relaxation. There are picnic spots and viewing decks where you can stop for a snack, take in the views, and watch wildlife from a distance.

Best Time to Visit

Addo Elephant National Park is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you’re hoping to see. The summer months (November to February) are warm, and wildlife tends to be more active in the cooler mornings and evenings. However, this is also the wet season, so you may experience a bit of rain.

If you’re looking for drier, cooler conditions, the winter months (May to August) are ideal. While the temperatures can drop in the mornings and evenings, the dry season often means animals congregate around waterholes, making sightings more frequent.

A Sustainable Safari

One of the most appealing aspects of Addo is its focus on sustainability and conservation. The park was originally established to protect the last remaining elephants in the area, and today it continues to play a crucial role in preserving these magnificent creatures and their environment. Addo is a great place for travelers who want to enjoy an authentic, responsible safari experience, where the emphasis is on conservation and education.

Exploring The Eastern Cape

Exploring the Eastern Cape: South Africa's Hidden Gem

For something more off-the-beaten-path, Morgan Bay offers a hidden paradise with clear waters, great for swimming, and dramatic views of the coastline.

Cintsa and Mazeppa Bay are perfect for those looking to surf or relax in tranquility, while Jeffreys Bay is world-renowned for its surfing spots. With warm Indian Ocean waters, long beaches, and breathtaking views, the Eastern Cape’s coastline is definitely a must-see for beach lovers.

2. The Heart of Safari Adventures
The Eastern Cape is often a more affordable and less crowded alternative to the famous Kruger National Park when it comes to safari experiences. It is home to a number of amazing private and public game reserves that offer incredible wildlife sightings.

Addo Elephant National Park is one of the most popular safari destinations in the Eastern Cape. This vast park is home to over 600 elephants, and you can also spot lions, buffalo, rhinos, and a wide variety of bird species. It's the third-largest national park in South Africa and one of the best places to get up close to the Big 5.

For a more exclusive experience, check out Shamwari Game Reserve, a private reserve with top-notch accommodation and guided game drives, allowing you to spot wildlife in a more intimate and luxurious setting.

3. Charming Towns with Rich History
The Eastern Cape has a fascinating history, and its towns reflect the deep cultural heritage of the region. The province is the birthplace of many prominent figures in South Africa’s history, including Nelson Mandela.

In Uitenhage, you’ll find the Volkswagen Factory, which offers an interesting industrial tour. Grahamstown, home to the renowned National Arts Festival, is a charming town that brings together art, history, and lively events. This historical town is also known for its beautiful 19th-century architecture and colonial charm.

If you’re a fan of history, a visit to Qunu, Nelson Mandela’s childhood village, is a must. The Nelson Mandela Museum in nearby Mthatha offers a deeper understanding of the iconic leader’s life, showcasing artifacts from his early life, his time in prison, and his post-presidency days.

4. Adventure Awaits: Outdoor Activities in the Eastern Cape
For outdoor enthusiasts, the Eastern Cape is the ideal destination for hiking, cycling, and more. The Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers hiking, mountain biking, and 4x4 adventures through rugged terrain, with stunning mountain views and unique biodiversity.

Another adventure hotspot is Tsitsikamma National Park, which is home to the famous Otter Trail, a multi-day hiking trek along the stunning coastline. The park also offers some of the best canopy tours in the country, where you can zipline through lush forests.

For a bit more adrenaline, try shark cage diving in Gansbaai (although technically in the Western Cape, it's relatively close to the Eastern Cape border), or take part in whale watching in places like Plettenberg Bay or Port Alfred.

5. A Culinary Adventure
The Eastern Cape offers a variety of local food experiences that should be on every traveler’s list. Enjoy a traditional braai (barbecue) with locals or sample fresh seafood along the coast.

Thrill-seekers willing to brave the cold can join us for an action-packed tour down the scenic coastal stretch of Garden Route paradise. These weekend tours depart on Fridays from Port Elizabeth returning on Sundays.

Day 1 of the tour kicks off on a Friday as we depart from Port Elizabeth – the “gateway” to the iconic Garden Route. Our first stop on our way to Plettenberg Bay is the breathtakingly beautiful Tsitsikamma National Park tucked between the mountains and sea.

Covering 80km of pristine coastline, this picturesque coastal reserve serves as a haven to a rich variety of marine species and indigenous flora such as fynbos.

Upon arrival at the Tsitsikamma National Park, we slip into the crystal-clear water and kayak up the river – all the while learning about the unique ecosystems that make up this magical place from an experienced guide. Further up the river, our adventurers will jump onto a lilo to reach the perfect swim spot at a leisurely pace. This is followed by an invigorating hike through the park as we head towards the ever-popular coastal town of Plettenberg Bay.

Day 2 of our Garden Route Tour begins with our adventurous travellers hiking at the famous Robberg Peninsula to spot some whales, dolphins, seals and snapping away at those perfect shots which would make them the envy of all their friends on their social media platforms.

Following the hike, we head to our next destination of Sedgefield, which boasts a 13km-long pristine beach, for an afternoon of paragliding, learning SUP (stand-up paddleboarding) or paragliding, or for the brave wave warriors, learning to surf.

Some activities are weather and time-dependent so the third day offers our adventurers, who have made pre-arrangements with our guides, a choice between wakeboarding, snorkelling, ocean safaris, sky diving or jumping from the world’s highest commercial bridge bungy at Bloukrans Bridge before we head back to where it all began – the gateway to the garden route, Port Elizabeth. Contact us if you want to be a part of the non-stop action of our Garden Route Adventure Tour.

Cango Caves

For those adventurers looking to get away for a few days and head into the Klein Karoo, we highly recommend a visit to the famous Cango Caves at the foothills of the Swartberg Mountain range outside Oudtshoorn.

The natural wonders of these caves situated in a limestone ridge include a series of dripstone caverns that lead to majestic halls of stalagmite formations boasting enchanting names, such as “The Bridal Couple” and “Glass Flower Fantasy”.

The caves span 41km of tunnels and chambers to get lost in, but you won’t have to worry about that as you would be accompanied by experienced guides leading this exploration into the earth itself in a 90-minute adventure tour. (This exciting stop, is one of the highlights featured in our one-way tour to Cape Town.)

Book an exciting escape along the Garden Route

Everyone loves and deserves a good adventure when the humdrum routine of city life starts to wear you down.
On leaving the Tsitsikamma National Park, the tour heads towards the ever-popular coastal town of Plettenberg Bay.

Our adventure seekers start the following day with an invigorating hike to the famous Robberg Peninsula to spot some whales, dolphins, seals and enjoy the breath-taking view. Following the hike, we grab lunch before heading to Sedgefield for an afternoon of surfing, learning SUP (stand-up paddle boarding) or paragliding.

Some optional activities include paragliding, wakeboarding, skydiving and jumping off the 216m-high Bloukrans Bridge near Nature’s Valley – attached to a bungy cord, of course!

Three-day One-way Garden Route Tour to Cape Town

We start off our tour from Port Elizabeth, heading to the undisputed surf capital of Africa, Jeffreys Bay. Our adventurers will get ample time to take in the beauty of its ivory sands and crashing waves.

At Afroventures, we understand that your time is precious, which is why we never look to waste any of it on showing you things that are not going to be worthwhile. So we’ve compiled some of the best time-sensitive day trip activities Port Elizabeth has to offer that are not only fun and convenient but also absolutely worth it!

Take a township tour

For those of you who don’t have the time for lengthy cultural tours or extended holidays, then we have something for you! This is not just for foreign visitors – it’s something locals may never have experienced, and it’s been in your backyard this whole time. Our Township Experience day trips offer a 3-hour guided tour of Walmer township in Port Elizabeth. This tour is designed for those who want to fit in as much local flavour as possible in a short space of time and for those who want to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Xhosa culture and get a window into the lives of local inhabitants. Join us and dive into the rich history of PE and see how millions of South Africans live.

Day trip to Addo Elephant Park

Spending your day exploring the natural splendour of the 3rd largest National Park in South Africa accompanied by our expert guides is never going to be a waste of time. With over 700 hundred elephants as well as lion, buffalo, leopard, hyena and rhino, you are guaranteed some fantastic sightings during a day safari in this amazing park. Our Addo Elephant Park day tours feature an opportunity to witness the unrivalled biodiversity. The park has something that no other reserve in the world can lay claim to – and that’s the Big 7 (the land-based Big 5 plus the southern right whale and great white shark). Sounds like time well spent to us.

See the sights of the city

PE might be the gateway to the Garden Route but that doesn’t mean that you should skip right past it. For those looking to get to know the ‘Friendly City’ and the rich history behind it, consider signing up for one of our day tours. Our Port Elizabeth City Tour is a walking tour through the inner city that starts from the Campanile Memorial, follows the famous historical Route 67 and takes in the Donkin Reserve at Belmont Terrace. This walking tour takes you through the history of one of the oldest cities in South Africa and shows you some of what makes this city special. So if you have some time to kill and would like to learn a bit about the Bay then look no further.

Wrap up your Garden Route trip in Port Elizabeth

Another well-known one is “The Friendly City”, with which we can’t argue, because PE residents are simply the best (sorry, not sorry). Although, on the whole, South Africans are a pretty friendly bunch. One of PE’s unique descriptors though is “The Gateway to the Garden Route”. And here are a few reasons why you should include Port Elizabeth in your Garden Route trip.

TSITSIKAMMA NATIONAL PARK

Considered arguably the most beautiful national park in South Africa, Tsitsikamma National Park is a coastal reserve that is famed for its seemingly endless misty forest and jaw-dropping rocky coastline. Covering over 80km of coastline means that it is home to a large variety marine life and indigenous flora and fauna. We know what you’re thinking: “That’s not exactly near Port Elizabeth now is it?” (Which is a fair comment but remember we said PE is the gateway to the Garden Route.) Our Tsitsikamma National Park Day Tour starts conveniently in PE and features a 3-hour kayak and lilo experience on the Storms River and guided hike in the park. It’s also Day 1 of our 3-day Garden Route Adventure Tour. Call us for bookings or book here.

BLOUKRANS BUNGY

One of the Garden Route’s main attractions must be world’s highest commercial bungy jump at the Bloukrans Bridge overlooking the Bloukrans River Valley. The beauty of the valley creates a perfect backdrop for those adventure-seekers who are willing to hurl themselves more than 200m down towards the river below. We make it easy for thrill-seekers who wish to explore the region with our Garden Route Adventure Tour package that (surprise!) starts and finishes in Port Elizabeth. Bungy jumping, skydiving, ocean safaris, paragliding and snorkelling are just some of the optional activities that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

ADRENALIN ADDO

Allow a few days in Port Elizabeth at the end of your Garden Route exploration because there is so much to see and do right here in our own backyard. Just 20 minutes from the world-renowned Addo Elephant National Park and 50 minutes from PE, Adrenalin Addo is located right in the heart of the Sundays River Valley. While the obligatory side trip to see the elephants is an absolute must-do, Adrenalin Addo will also get your heart rate racing with the longest, highest and fastest double zipline in the whole of South Africa. Reaching speeds of up to 80 km/h on the 500m line, the aerial views of the valley’s natural splendour are nothing short of breath-taking. This amazing experience is one of the closing highlights of our Garden Route to Addo – Surf and Safari three-day tour.

Love your Eastern Cape adventures

We love this time of year because it allows us to give you the perfect excuse to get away with that special someone. And it gives us the chance to do what we do best – give you special memories that will last a lifetime! So join us as we kick off this romance by sharing some of the Eastern Cape’s outdoor adventures.

KAYAK AND LILO ON STORMS RIVER, TSITSIKAMMA

Tsitsikamma is a word derived from the indigenous Khoisan language meaning, “place of much water”, and is situated in the heart of the stunning Garden Route. The Tsitsikamma National Park certainly deserves its name with breath-taking views of secluded valleys covered in beautiful wildflowers and temperate forests, with deep river gorges that run all the way to the sea. Impress Bae with all this natural beauty and some quality time, while floating along on a two to three-hour kayak and lilo excursion on Storms River, followed by a guided hike.

ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK

Nothing will help score more points in the love department than showing your soft spot for animals. Take a roadtrip adventure and spend the day with your special someone seeing the gentle giants of Addo Elephant National Park. As South Africa’s third largest national park, Addo is also the only one able to claim that is home to Africa’s “Big 7” – the Big 5 plus the southern right whale and great white shark in the marine section. Our Addo day tour is the perfect way to spend time together and allow Africa’s big skies and pristine landscapes to seduce you.

WEEKEND GETAWAY

If you don’t have much time on your hands, our day trips around Port Elizabeth or the Garden Route can pack a few extra activities into your holiday. But if you have a little more time to spare, a multi-day tour makes a lovely adventure getaway. Our three-day Surf and Safari tour brings you the very best of Addo and the Garden Route – without the headache of planning it all! Highlights include an Addo Elephant National Park safari, a ziplining adventure, a visit to a wildcat sanctuary, and the surfing Mecca of Jeffreys Bay!

If you’d prefer to escape the crowds and enjoy a more personalised, romantic getaway, talk to us about arranging a customised private tour.

Outdoor escapes in the Eastern Cape

Coffee Bay

Coffee Bay is the perfect place to enjoy this kind of tranquillity and escape into the heart of the Wild Coast. Getting to this picture-perfect destination is an adventure all on its own – the cows, goats and pigs that wander onto the road add an element of local colour. A magnificent and popular spot for visitors is the famous ‘Hole in the Wall’. This extraordinary natural arch, where the sea comes rushing through, is steeped in Xhosa mythology and has captivated all its visitors. If hiking is your thing, try our 5-Day Central Wild Coast Explorer package for a chance to see Coffee Bay in all its natural splendour.

Adrenaline Addo

Addo is world-renowned for the wonderful wildlife that the Addo Elephant National Park has to offer, but if you’re looking to go beyond game-viewing and increase your heart rate, then we have just the thing. Adrenaline Addo’s zipline tour is the highest, longest and fastest double zipline in South Africa! The 500m-long twin cables should get you screaming for the moon (and your mom!), as you zip along at speeds of up to 60km/h across Sundays River while taking in the scenic environment. This hands-free zipline will have you feeling like you can fly, before the automated braking system brings the exhilarating ride to a safe and smooth stop. Our Surf and Safari package from the Garden Route to Addo offers adventurers this wild ride and so much more.

Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve

When you need to get out of the city and reconnect with nature but you don’t have much time to spare, give us a call. The pristine Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve just outside Port Elizabeth is where you can enjoy a two-and-a-half-hour Beach and Trail Horse Ride. A relaxing walk or canter on the beautiful Sardinia Bay beach is just what the doctor ordered!

Sandboarding in Sundays River

Sundays River is just outside the Port Elizabeth and is home to the famous Alexandria Coastal Dunefield – the largest and least degrading dunefield in South Africa. The dunes offer people who may not be as comfortable riding the great Indian Ocean waves in Algoa Bay the opportunity to still hop on a board and ride the dunes. This awesome sandboarding adventure can be made possible with our day trip offerings. Three hours of cutting up the dunes will definitely free you of those big city blues.

Get #outafroventuring in South Africa in 2019

Here are three exciting ideas to get you #outafroventuring in the Eastern and Western Cape!

Township Experience

Stepping out of one’s comfort zone can definitely be thrilling. With this unique experience, we offer you the chance to delve into the local Xhosa culture and to learn about the rich history of the Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth. Although there are some serious socio-economic challenges, the vibrant energy that lives in this community is infectious and it really shows the definition of Ubuntu, or humanity. So, if you are looking to step outside your comfort zone and into a fresh experience then check out our township experience day trip and let us show you a side of Port Elizabeth you may not be familiar with.

Plettenberg Bay

We have all seen videos of surfers cutting it up on the waves and thought about how lekker that looked! Well, how about you let us make your fantasies of being the next Kelly Slater a reality? Plettenberg Bay is a wonderful gem along the Garden Route that has so much to offer an adventure seeker – including the opportunity to learn how to surf. Our Garden Route Adventure Tour offers you a chance to ride the waves, take a hike around the iconic Robberg Peninsula and even spy on some whales, dolphins and seals. If you are looking to visit the world-famous Garden Route, then you know where to find us.

Bungy Jumping

For those willing to take a leap of faith, then we’ve got the perfect thing for you. The Bloukrans Bridge is the highest bungy bridge in the world (!), meaning completing the jump will instantly catapult you into legendary status within your squad. At 216m, this jump is not for the faint of heart but it is an adrenaline-pumping experience that will be one of the great highlights of your life. The Bungy Tour day trip, offered in partnership with our sister company Lungile Lodge in Port Elizabeth, is a freefall experience that will definitely start your year off with a bang, or rather a scream.

Three Coastal Hotspots in Sunny South Africa

The most exciting part is that all of these spots are accessible from the friendly city of Port Elizabeth, as you head along the coast towards Cape Town! (Explore our one-way tours here.)

Plettenberg Bay

Situated along the scenic Garden Route, Plettenberg Bay is a small but classy coastal town between Tsitsikamma in the Eastern Cape and Knysna in the Western Cape. Plett is famously known for its kilometres of unspoiled beaches and a range of leisure activities for every kind of traveller, which include charter boat cruises, hiking, canoeing and abseiling. Other great activities include Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary – the world’s only multi-species, free-roaming primate sanctuary, located a few minutes out of town; as well as Birds of Eden, the world's largest free-flight aviary; and Robberg Nature Reserve. For those with more of a daring soul, a short trip along the N2 towards Port Elizabeth will get you to Bloukrans Bridge, the highest bungy bridge in the world! (Make it easy on yourself with our Garden Route Adventure Tour.)

Sedgefield

Sedgefield is a coastal town situated on the Garden Route, and easily accessible via the N2 national road, between the towns of George and Knysna. Sedgefield is home to a collection of amazing beaches – such as Swartvlei, Myoli, Cola and Platbank – and a tranquil lagoon. Try your hand at yachting, windsurfing, boardsailing, canoeing, waterskiing, paragliding and wakeboarding, or go birdwatching or horseback riding. Here you’ll also find the famous Wild Oats Farmers Market on Saturdays and the Scarab Village craft market, which is open daily. With so much to do, you’d better start planning! (Or you can leave it to us with an easy daytrip.)

The Southernmost Tip of Africa

Cape Agulhas is a rocky headland in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is famous for being the southernmost tip of the African continent and the beginning of the dividing line between the Atlantic and Indian oceans. With beautiful views and Instagram-worthy photo opportunities (follow us), this spot is bound to make your family and friends jealous, and get them packing and on their way to sunny South Africa.

3 lekker places to go this summer

Summer has finally announced itself in South Africa and we think it’s going to be a lekker one. With so much to do and seemingly so little time, we thought we would give you some of our favourites in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route. Whatever your plans, we’ve got your back this summer!

Surfing in J-Bay:

The surfing mecca that is Jeffreys Bay is a stone’s throw from Port Elizabeth (less than an hour’s drive) and a hotspot for surfers from around the globe. Situated on the Sunshine Coast, this resort town features some of the most famous surf spots in the world, including Supertubes, which plays host to the international J-Bay Open surf competition and is recognised as one of the top 5 right-hand breaks on the planet. If the idea of surfing J-Bay’s radical breaks sounds daunting, there is no need to stress, as there are surf classes that cater for the beginner. Who knows, you might even become a pro. (Or get the best of beach and bush by checking out our Surf and Safari Tour here.)

Tsitsikamma National Park:

Covering 80km along the ruggedly beautiful coastline of the Garden Route, the Tsitsikamma National Park is home to all manner of wildlife, marine species and indigenous flora. Tsitsikamma is a Khoisan word, meaning “place of much water", which is of course quite true. The Storms River Gorge is a gorgeous spot to enjoy a kayaking thrill ride or a gentle Lilo float downriver. Wrap up your summer adventure with a hike through indigenous forest, while the sun sets on another perfect day in Africa! (See how much you can cram into one amazing day here.)

Cango Caves:

If you break away from the coast and head into the Karoo, you simply must take the opportunity to visit the majestic Cango Caves outside Oudtshoorn. The caves are a series of dripstone caverns that give way to vast halls of stalagmite formations with cool names like ‘The Bridal Couple’, ‘Glass Flower Fantasy’ and ‘Weird Cango Candle’. In totality, the Cango caves sprawl across 4km of extensive interlinking tunnels and chambers. Exploring this natural wonder is a part of a supervised tour, which includes a 90-minute ‘adventure tour’. (This is just one of the highlights on our one-way tours to Cape Town.)

PE’s best summer day tours for adrenaline junkies

Bungy Jumping and Skydiving

At 216 metres, the Bloukrans Bridge has long been acknowledged as the world’s highest bungy bridge as well as the highest commercial natural bungy jump in the world. And it is right here in our backyard, in the heart of the scenic Garden Route just two hours from Port Elizabeth. For those who see themselves as adrenaline junkies looking to experience all the thrills that life has to offer, we think this is a great place to start if you dare.

If the idea of swinging on a bungy cord isn’t enough to get your blood racing, why not add skydiving from 10 000 feet? We offer a unique “daredevil double” that will surely raise the hairs on the back of your neck. The location for this death-defying jump is truly one of South Africa’s most scenic drop zones – skydiving over the surfer’s paradise of Jeffreys Bay will make you the envy of your friends.

Sandboarding

For those who prefer a more family-friendly outing then, of course, we have something for that. Don’t miss the opportunity to take on the Alexandria dune field – the largest, most impressive and least degraded dune field in South Africa!

Get off to an easy start with a picturesque boat cruise on Sundays River, where some birdlife and river creatures can be seen on their own adventures, completely oblivious to the fun that awaits you. Then admire the breathtaking sea views from the massive dunes before dropping off the other side as you test your need for speed. It’s the perfect place for fun in the sun – just remember to pack a camera for those amazing action shots and wipe-out moments to show your envious friends.

Find out more about our three-hour tour here.

Canyoning

Be prepared for a wild adventure if you choose canyoning! You will be swimming through mountain pools, abseiling around waterfalls, rock hopping and whizzing along on a rock-pool zip line. This four-hour canyoning experience will leave you breathless (we’re breathless just typing this!) and is not to be missed by outdoor enthusiasts who don’t mind getting wet.

See more on the beauty of canyoning here.

Spend your summer on the Garden Route

It’s time to get up, gather your essentials, and get yourself to South Africa! Here are some of the hotspots worth visiting.

Nelson Mandela Bay

The watersport capital of South Africa is none other than the city of Port Elizabeth (PE). Port Elizabeth also serves as a convenient gateway to the Garden Route and makes for a great starting point for your travel endeavours. What better way to start your journey than basking in the fantastic weather on the beautiful beaches of Port Elizabeth. Or head down to the surfing mecca of Jeffreys Bay, only 45 minutes from PE, to catch some waves at Supertubes and get some awesomely discounted beachwear at the Billabong factory store.

Tantalising Tsitsikamma

Filled with towering forests and luscious green scenery, Tsitsikamma is situated along the Garden Route and a popular spot among tourists. With hiking trails and the Storms River suspension bridge nearby, Tsitsikamma is the perfect area to spot birdlife and enjoy forest walks along this part of the southern coast.

Sand, sun, Sedgefield

The small beach town of Sedgefield is situated between Plettenberg Bay and Wilderness and is home to beautiful beach homes, vibey backpackers, an amazing coastline, and plenty of activities to do. After a full day of outdoor adventure, and lazing around at Myoli beach, what better way to kick back and relax than at Pili Pili, a local bar and restaurant, where you can feast on local South African cuisine with your feet in the sand.

The wild, wild Wilderness

Another small town situated along South Africa’s Garden Route is Wilderness. It is home to beautiful stretches of beaches as well as the famous Map of Africa, a lookout point on top of a hill offering panoramic views of the great Indian Ocean, Outeniqua Mountains and Kaaimans River. It is also home to the Wilderness National Park where you can spot some of Southern Africa’s wildlife in their natural habitat.

Addo – more than a national park

Easily accessible from the city of Port Elizabeth, there are many more things to see and do beyond the Addo Elephant National Park boundaries and a great tour operator will help you unlock the hidden gems in this area.

Addo is one of the biggest citrus-producing areas in South Africa and the community of Addo have played a tremendous role in the development of the small town and its hospitality and tourism industry success. Of course, a visit to Addo Elephant National Park is at the top of our list, but here are some more adrenaline-fueled recommendations:

1. Adrenalin Addo

Adrenalin Addo is situated in the Sundays River Valley just 20 minutes away from Addo Elephant National Park. It is home to the ONLY double zipline in the whole of Africa, as well as an 18-metre-high swing (the first of its kind in South Africa) that is bound to get your adrenaline pumping!

2. Sandboarding

The Sundays River, also known as Nukakamma or “grassy water” in the Khoisan language, is said to be the fastest flowing river in Southern Africa as it winds its way through Addo and the valley.

The coastal section of Addo Elephant National Park – which is best accessed via the N2 freeway from Port Elizabeth – incorporates the Alexandria dune field, which rises from the banks of the Sundays River. This is the largest coastal dune field in the southern hemisphere, making it ideal for sandboarding. If the thrill of sandboarding is not for you, and you’re looking for something less adventurous, there are boat cruises along the Sundays River, as well as a lovely restaurant, close by.

3. Addo Elephant National Park

This world-renowned national park needs no introduction and should be a priority stop if you are travelling around this part of the Eastern Cape. Even if you have heard about it – we are going to tell you about it anyway! Addo Elephant National Park is the third largest national park in Southern Africa with the densest population of African elephant – over six hundred! Situated less than an hour’s drive from the city of Port Elizabeth, it is super convenient and a great spot to tick all your African safari boxes as it is home not only to Africa’s Big 5 but also the Big 7, which includes the southern right whale and great white shark.

4. COMING SOON: Shark Cage Diving

Bird and St Croix islands in Algoa Bay form part of the marine section of Addo Elephant National Park. Whale and dolphin-watching tours to these islands are a must-do activity to complete your Big 7 checklist.

And soon adventurous visitors will be able to get even closer to one of nature’s most powerful apex predators – the great white shark. Raggy Charters has been granted the licence to operate the Eastern Cape’s first and only shark cage diving tour.

Adventurers will be taken 65km from the Port Elizabeth Harbour to the clear waters near Bird Island on the eastern side of Algoa Bay. Preparations for the shark cage diving tours are currently underway. Watch this space for details of this Big 7 bucket list adventure!

Addo or Kruger – which national park do I choose?

There is always a big debate among travellers about which of South Africa’s national parks is the better option for a Big 5 safari. In all honesty, both Addo Elephant National Park and the Kruger National Park have their unique qualities for the adventure of a lifetime.

The Kruger National Park is the first and largest national park in Southern Africa and home to the Big 5. It spans 19,485 square kilometres and lies inland to the north-east of South Africa, across the eastern parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces.

Addo Elephant National Park, on the other hand, is situated in the Eastern Cape Province just outside the major coastal city of Port Elizabeth. Boasting a marine section, it is home to the “Big 7” which includes the great white shark and southern right whale and is home to the largest density of African Elephant in Africa. We think Addo and Kruger are both pretty cool – here is why.

Wildlife Experiences

Both Addo Elephant National Park and the Kruger National Park are home to the Big 5. Addo’s expansion now includes the Woody Cape Nature Reserve, which extends from the Sundays River mouth towards Alexandria, and a marine reserve, which includes St. Croix Island and Bird Island. It is the only park in the world to house Africa's "Big 7" (elephant, rhinoceros, lion, buffalo, leopard, southern right whale and great white shark) in their natural habitat. The Kruger National Park is the largest and most visited park in South Africa and has a wide range of wildlife from giraffe to zebra and many species of wild cats. These parks are completely different from one another, but they both have a lot to offer in terms of fauna and flora. While Kruger is typically characterised by savanna grassland, Addo covers five of South Africa’s seven biomes.

Travelling Distances

Addo and Kruger are each suited to a very specific type of traveller with differing interests. Why do we say this? If immersing yourself in an African safari is at the top of your to-do list and one of the main reasons you’re travelling to South Africa, then the Kruger National Park is for you. The park is a five-hour drive from the major city of Johannesburg and, because of its huge scale, it is advisable to stay over for a few days to get the full safari experience and explore as much of the park as possible. On the other, Addo Elephant Park is ideally suited to day-trippers and short-stay visitors. Situated just an hour outside Port Elizabeth, the gateway city to the Garden Route, Addo is the perfect safari to get your Garden Route adventure started.

Travel Budgets

Travelling, in general, can be pretty pricey but travelling in and around South Africa can be quite reasonable if you plan correctly. Booking accommodation and African guided safaris at both parks in advance will have major benefits, especially during the off-peak season and during the South African winter months. Pack your essential snacks, water and sunscreen for long game drives inside the parks but take note that both Addo Elephant National Park and the Kruger National Park have restaurants and curio shops, so bring money for meals and mementoes! But no matter what the price, we can assure you that the experience in any one of these parks is worth the moola (a South African term for money)!
