15 Day Southern Africa Explorer

The perfect option for anyone wanting to see as much as possible in 15 days. Countries visited include: South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland.

Departing from Port Elizabeth in the heart of the sunshine coast of South Africa. This tour covers the awe inspiring wild coast, the Drakensberg mountain range, Durban, Hluhluwe Imfolozi National Park, Isimangaliso Wetland park in St Lucia, the world famous Kruger National Park, the Panorama Route, Lesotho and Swaziland.

Itinerary

Day 1

Port Elizabeth to Coffee Bay

Day one of our adventure will be spent travelling to the heart of the Wild coast of South Africa, Coffee Bay. This vibrant little coastal gem will make you wish you could stay for a month. Once we have settled into in our overnight accommodation we will be greeted with a warm welcome from the local village residents. Tonight we will dine in typical South African cuisine followed by drinks around a fire, killer pool or/and a late night beach excursion. Coffee Bay is well known for a good party.  

Day 2

Coffee Bay to Mdumbi

After breakfast we head out early for a hike to Mdumbi, through the villages and parallel to the beautifully ferocious coastline. Use your newly learnt ‘Xhosa’ skills and greet passersby with a smile. Take photos of the ever-so secluded ‘Mapuzi’ beach and enjoy getting your feet wet in the crystal clear river then follow your guide towards the Mapuzi cliffs. Experience a natural Jacuzzi hidden within the caverns of these cliffs. Live a little differently- go cliff jumping or simply chill out and soak up the beauty of this unique area. After trekking a little further we will reach our next destination – Mdumbi. Sporting a long and pristine coloured beach, you can cool off in the Indian Ocean, sunbathe, go for a surf lesson, kayak on the Mdumbi River or chill-out for the rest of the afternoon.

Day 3

Mdumbi to Southern Drakensberg

After a relaxing morning we depart from the stunning wild coast and make our way inland towards the famous Drakensberg Mountains, stretching for over 1000 kilometers, these mountains create a very impressive backdrop in a number a provinces and neighboring countries. Our starting point for exploring this natural masterpiece will be at Sani Lodge at the foot of the Sani Pass that crosses into Lesotho  

Day 4

Southern Drakensberg to Lesotho

After a hearty breakfast we depart from Sani Lodge, we then travel the spectacular 4x4 track up Sani Pass and cross into Lesotho. Here we enter another world altogether! We drive further into Lesotho crossing the Sani Flats to visit a small shepherd’s village. Get a feel for the unique life the locals live. We will have a picnic lunch with stunning views and afterwards we take a short walk to view the highest point in Southern Africa (3482 m). We will then return to Sani Chalet where we will spend the night. The highest pub in Africa will be right next door to us.

Day 5

Lesotho to Northern Drakensberg

After a leisurely morning we depart towards the Northern Drakensberg. Situated between the Royal Natal National Park and Cathedral Peak this is the perfect location to explore the Amphitheatre Mountains. On arrival you will be free to explore one of the many trails on offer, the following day we will visit Tugela Falls the highest waterfall in Africa (2nd highest in the world).

Day 6

Northern Drakensberg

This morning we will begin our hike of the Amphitheatre Mountains and the Tugela Falls. The Amphitheatre consists of an 8 km long escarpment wall flanked by two magnificent peaks – the Sentinel and Eastern Buttress. The Tugela waterfall cascades down its basalt face and into the Royal Natal National Park below. The highest point on the escarpment is the Mont-Aux-Sources at 3283.4m. This is a breathtaking hike and considered to be one of the most scenic in the world.

Day 7

Northern Drakensberg to Durban

After breakfast we make our way to the Kwazulu Natal coastline to the capital city of the Zulu Kingdom “Durban”. Here east meets west, first world meets third world and Zulu, English and Indian cultures rub shoulders in a spicy architectural mix. On arrival you will have the rest of the day to explore this vibrant city.   

Day 8

Durban to St Lucia

Our next destination lies within a unique world heritage site that contains 5 ecosystems. Animals roam the streets and hippos, crocodiles and sharks live in the estuary. Over 90% of South Africa’s crocodile population live here, welcome to St Lucia. Tonight we will be accommodated in the heart of St Lucia in safari tents.

Day 9

St Lucia

After an early start to the day we will begin the first big 5 safari of our tour. We will spend most of the day exploring the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game reserve, the oldest reserve in Africa. Home to 84 mammal species and 370 bird species, this is a natures lovers paradise. At the end of our Safari experience we will explore the St Lucia estuary by boat on a hippo and crocodile cruise.

Day 10

St Lucia to Swaziland

After breakfast we will depart to Swaziland entering through the Lavumisa border post. Our overnight stop will be close to the Capital city of Swaziland, Mbabane. We will be staying inside the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, this is Swaziland's pioneer conservation area and a beautiful, secluded sanctuary situated in the Kingdom's Ezulwini Valley, or the “Valley of Heavens” as it is referred to by locals. The name Mlilwane (“Little Fire” in siSwati) was derived from the numerous fires started by lightning strikes on the Mlilwane Hill, but now holds significance as the little fire that started a big conservation movement in Swaziland resulting in the saving of over 22 species from local extinction across the three reserves. We will be accommodated in traditional beehive grass huts tonight.

Day 11

Swaziland

This morning we will be treated to a traditional Umphakatsi Cultural Experience and get a true taste of Swazi culture and daily life.

After lunch we will take a game drive through the Milwane Wildlife Sanctuary with a local ranger in an open safari vehicle.

The rest of the day will be all yours to explore some more of the local sights and sounds.

Day 12

Swaziland to Hazyview

After spending the morning exploring the capital city of Swaziland “Mbabane”, we cross over back into South Africa towards the outskirts of the Kruger National Park. Tonight will be spent in Hazyview, on the edge of the World Famous Kruger National Park.

 

Day 13

Kruger National Park

Today will be spent inside the Kruger National Park, South Africa’s premier game reserve, with more big mammals than any other reserve in Africa. The Kruger Park is considered to be one of the greatest game parks in the world and is a leader in conserving African heritage. We will spend the day searching for Africa’s elusive big 5 and various other species. Make sure you camera is charged up. 

 

Day 14

Hazyview to Graskop

After a relaxing morning we start the scenic “Panoramma Route”. The views are spectacular! The highlights include: Gods Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, The Three Rondavels and The Blyde River Canyon.

After a relaxing day exploring these awesome sights we head to our overnight stop in Sabie. Tonight we will have dinner at a local brewery. 

Day 15

Graskop to Johannesburg

On our final day we depart from Graskop via the remaining part of the Panorama route towards our final destination, Johannesburg.

On arrival our tour will end.
